How does EN 62368-1 use hazard-based safety engineering?
EN 62368-1 takes a hazard-based approach to the safety of audio/video, information and communication technology equipment. It identifies and classifies energy sources, considers how people could be exposed to them and specifies safeguards to reduce the likelihood of injury. The assessment connects the product's design with its intended use and foreseeable conditions.
Which products and standards are involved?
The EN 62368-1 family covers audio/video, information and communication technology equipment within its stated scope. It succeeded the EN 60065 and EN 60950-1 safety standards for relevant equipment. Check the applicable edition, any published restrictions and the requirements of your target market or certification scheme. A past transition date is not a universal rule for every product today.
Which hazards does the approach address?
The assessment considers electrical, thermal, mechanical and radiation energy, fire hazards and hazardous substances. It classifies relevant energy sources and selects safeguards appropriate to the potential exposure. The safeguards also take account of whether the person using or maintaining the equipment is an ordinary, instructed or skilled person.
Do existing products need reassessment?
Review existing test reports and design records against the requirements relevant to the product being supplied. CE marking does not automatically require third-party certification, and harmonised standards are generally voluntary. A certification scheme may have its own transition rules. A gap assessment establishes which existing evidence remains useful and where further analysis or testing is needed.
What is the manufacturer's responsibility?
The manufacturer must demonstrate that the product meets the applicable legal requirements. Where EN 62368-1 is used, the selected edition and assessment evidence should match the product's design, intended users and operating conditions. Standards support the assessment; they do not replace the manufacturer's responsibility for conformity.
Assess design changes for their effect on hazards, safeguards and existing evidence. Update the relevant documentation and determine whether additional testing or a certification-body review is needed. Not every change automatically requires a completely new approval.
